In this episode of What the RFI?, Matt Brennan explores how AI is already being used across the AEC industry, from architectural design and BIM to RFIs, shop drawings, submittals, estimating, field documentation and Construction Administration.
More importantly, we look at the bigger question: is AI actually coming for our jobs, or will it simply change the way we work?
AI IN ARCHITECTURE & CONSTRUCTION
AI is already changing how architects and construction professionals work.
We look at tools and workflows involving generative design, BIM, Revit, estimating, rendering, construction documentation, meeting notes, field reviews and project coordination.
The opportunity isn't simply to automate everything. It's to remove repetitive work so professionals can spend more time solving problems, coordinating projects and making better decisions.
AI IN CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION
Construction Administration has enormous potential for AI.
We explore how AI could help with:
- Reviewing shop drawings and submittals
- Comparing submittals against specifications
- Creating submittal schedules from project specifications
- Summarizing RFIs and change orders
- Searching drawings and specifications for RFI responses
- Identifying coordination problems before tender
- Tracking long-lead construction items
- Generating field reports
- Documenting construction progress
- Improving project coordination
But AI doesn't remove professional responsibility.
As Matt discusses in the episode: garbage in still means garbage out. Architects, engineers and construction professionals still need to review the information, understand the contract documents and exercise professional judgment.
WILL AI REPLACE ARCHITECTS?
Maybe that's the wrong question.
AI can replace tasks.
The same way BIM and Revit changed architectural production, AI could allow smaller teams to accomplish significantly more work.
The professionals who understand how to use these tools effectively may have a major advantage over those who ignore them.
And that's where Terminator comes in...
“Three billion human lives ended on August 29th, 1997…”
Terminator 2 imagined a future where machines eventually turned against humanity.
Thankfully, we're not quite at Skynet.
But the movie raised a question that suddenly feels a lot less like science fiction:
What happens when machines become capable of doing work previously performed by humans?
This episode explores what that question means for architecture, construction and Construction Administration.
The future probably isn't humans versus machines.
It's humans learning how to work with them.
