The building people use is the one that gets built. All the care invested in drawings and specifications still needs attention during construction. Episode 20 of What the RFI? connects pride in workmanship with the everyday work of Construction Administration.

Lessons from Episode 20
Details are part of the experience
Matt’s stay in a distinctive tree house prompts a reflection on the details people notice. Materials, junctions and the way a space works can leave a lasting impression. The same applies to larger projects: a thoughtful design loses value if its important details disappear during construction.
Identify the elements that matter most to the project. Review their submittals carefully and discuss installation requirements before the work is concealed. That attention gives the team a chance to resolve problems while there are still practical options.
Evaluate substitutions with care
Availability and budget pressures can bring alternate products to the table. A useful review considers performance, appearance, interfaces and the effect on other work. Establish what is changing before accepting a proposal simply because it is easier to obtain.
When a substitution is necessary, document the decision and coordinate the affected drawings and specifications. Keep the owner involved in decisions that affect the agreed result.
Carry the effort through to handover
Field observations, clear reports and follow-up help protect the investment already made in design. Recording a deficiency is only the first step; the team still needs to track the response and confirm the outcome.
The end of a project can feel like the hardest part of a long race. Continue reviewing outstanding work, answering questions and closing records. That final effort helps the completed building reflect the care that started the project.
