By Matt Brennan • What the RFI? Episode 8
A detail becomes easier to understand when you see the materials, sequence and people involved in building it. Episode 8 brings Nathan Taylor onto What the RFI? for a conversation about site experience and passing knowledge to the next generation.

Lessons from Episode 8
Connect the drawing to the work
Nathan and Matt discuss why hands-on experience matters alongside office work. Seeing an installation helps emerging professionals connect drawings and specifications to the constraints of actual construction.
Ask to join a suitable site visit with experienced staff. Review the relevant documents beforehand and identify what the visit is intended to observe. Follow the site’s access and safety requirements, and use the opportunity to ask informed questions.
Arrive prepared and stay curious
Read the previous field report and meeting notes. Understand outstanding matters and the work expected next. That preparation makes the visit more useful to the project team.
Keep observing beyond the immediate item that brought you to site. Sequencing can reveal a coordination issue before it becomes expensive to correct. Record observations clearly and direct questions through the agreed project channels.
Build knowledge through relationships
The interview links mentorship, conferences and drawing practice with professional growth. Experienced colleagues and trades can explain why a detail works and what typically goes wrong.
Back in the office, connect those lessons to RFIs, submittals and future details. A short debrief helps turn an individual site experience into knowledge the wider team can use. Technology can support the record, while the learning still requires attention and conversation.
Your next step
Review drawings and previous records before visiting.
Confirm the visit’s purpose with your supervisor.
Ask how the observed work relates to the specified detail.
Debrief and carry useful lessons into the next project.
